Wow, first the police blotter reported that Bills RB Marshawn Lynch has been arrested for carrying a concealed weapon in LA, then the news kept rolling in with information about players getting cut and teams using the franchise tag.
It will be interesting to see if the league will approach Lynch as being a repeat offender or a first-timer. Remember his hit-and-run incident from last summer? NFL Commish Roger Goddell did not hand out any punishment but he could this time. It has been only a few months since Giants receiver Plaxico Burress tried to blow his own leg off in a NY nightclub. Firearms are a sensitve issue for the league right now and I would expect Goddell to act accordingly.
In other news that some find just as terrible, the Cincinnati Bengals used their franchise tag on a kicker. No, not the former Pro Bowl WR TJ Houshmandzadeh, but placekicker Shayne Graham. The Bengals claim that they will bid for Houshmandzadeh's services but the receiver gives himself less than a 10% chance of returning. The receiver also states that the team failed to get his quarterback's opinion on the matter. With WR Chad Johnson Ocho Cinco working his way out of town and WR Chris Henry acting like a juvenile delinquant, the Bengals are prepared to let their most reliable player leave town for NOTHING. Bengals fans have learned to expect nothing less from owner Mike Brown. He has been on a mission to kill the franchise since the day his legendary father, Paul Brown, passed away on August 5th, 1991.
Pre-Free Agency cuts were on the agenda on Monday as Jacksonville RB Fred Taylor, set to make 6 million in 2009, was cut today after 11 seasons with the Jaguars. People have been expecting this since Maurice Jones-Drew came onto the scene and performed at a high level, scoring 40 touchdowns in 3 seasons.
Also cut today was former 1999 first round selection, cornerback Chris McAlister. The former Baltimore Raven has been a 3-time Pro Bowler in his 10 year career but has been plagued with injuries the past few seasons. In 2005, McAlister signed a seven year deal worth 55 million dollars.
The Broncos saved 16 million today by cutting the increasingly disappointing DT Dwayne Robertson. This wasn't too much of a surprise with the coaching and scheme changes.
